Opening two minutes of The Little Mermaid, Ariels beginnings.

The little mermaid – Ariels beginnings.

`                       The little mermaid 3’s opening denotes the whole kingdom called Atlantica with mermaids swimming round all different colours to get the audience exited. It says at the beginning that all the magic lies under the sea; this will get the younger audience exited and intrigued making it a good opening.

The genre is automatically shown in the first two minutes of little mermaid 3 because it is a cartoon, it has happy and fun music, and talks about magic and kingdoms- straight away you can tell this is for the younger audience making it a family film. The way the film is shot at the beginning is good because it starts out being out of the sea with a high angle shot and moving down into the sea with the mermaids jumping out of the water, this will get the audience for this movie exited to see the rest of the film because it will feel like they are going down with the mermaids as it started off outside the sea.

We don’t find out a lot about the story in the first two minutes as it only shows and tells us that they live under the sea where it is magical and all get along well. We meet the king of Atlantica and the Queen, they seem very friendly as the Queen is singing to her children and they all look like they are admiring her and enjoying her music. The king walks out of his house and has everyone watching him and loving him. He also carries his daughter on his back which shows he has a good relationship with her. When it shows the queen it says “ she and there seven darling princesses filled his life with joy and soul” This tells the views that he loves them all very much and without them he would be lost.

Although it is a good opening in some ways, I think that it should’ve told us more about what might happen in the rest of the film to get the younger audience more exited and wanting to watch it even more. However it does show all good things in the beginning which could make the audience fantasize about being a mermaid and want to watch what happens to them and how they live even more.

The use of titles used suit the film well because it denotes an enchanted look as the colour is gold and the font is bold but posh. This connotes that the film will be very magical and will intrigue the target audience which is younger children but could stretch up to 13 year olds.

The camera shots that are used start with a long shot because it allows the film to set a scene and a location for the audience to begin to picture and put there selves in that position of being a mermaid. There are also a lot of medium shots which focus on the main characters so that the audience are able to see who they are going to link to. We see the other characters but the camera shots that are used are long shots to show the audience that they aren't the main characters.

The music that is played goes with the genre very well as it is happy and up beat at the beginning getting all the children exited to see the mermaids and when it goes into the queen it shows her singing in a very nice voice and shows all of the little mermaids admiring her which could make the audience admire her just like the mermaids.
