Dear john
In the first two minutes of dear john it shows a good opening because it tells the audience a background story of the main character ‘John’. The background story automatically makes the audience like him because it shows him fighting in the US army and being shot. When he is shot he tells us about a past memory he had that linked into what had just happened to him, the story that he tells us he says that he is in some way not good enough anymore (because he was shot) This will make the audience feel sorry for him and like him even more. This makes it a good opening because it draws the audience in to see whether he will survive and because they like him it makes them want to see what will happen to him throughout the movie.
The genre is shown in
the first two minutes but not until the end because it shows him fighting at
war which could make the audience think that it is an action film, however when
he starts to tell the audience about his story he finishes it by saying that
just before he was shot “the last thing that entered my mind was you” This
automatically makes the audience know it is a Romance film. They will fall in
love with him and want to know what love story will be shown.
Within the first two
minutes we don’t find out very much about what will happen throughout the film,
however we do find out that whoever he will lead the love story with, he knew
before he went to war. This makes the audience think that it might show all of
the past memories he has with the girl, by this I mean showing how they met.
This will intrigue the audience and make them want to view it even more because
they will want to know there whole story.
I think that the
first two minutes is good because it shows us a lot about the male main actor.
This could intrigue the girls more than the boys because they will want to know
more about him. However it doesn't lead on much on what will happen later in
the movie other than it is a romantic film. This could be a good thing because
the audience could view it as a mystery however other viewers could not want to
finish watching because they don’t know how it’ll end.
When the film shows him when he is younger with all of the coins dropping down, it is shown as a close up of his face. This is good because it them means the audience can see his expressions clearly and can make the audience see how much it means to him and how much it links into what is happening in the present. The camera angle when he is shown injured in the army is also a high angle which makes him seem vulnerable and like he is in danger. An extreme close of up his face which only allows the audience to see his eyes is shown as well when he is talking about the coins which shows him looking confused and like he doesn't know if he is going to make it or not.
non-diegetic sound is shown when the coins are being made as they seem to be really loud when they drop which is making it seem a lot more intense than it actually is towards the audience because that and his voice is all they can here.

The sound of the
music it quite intense and slow at the beginning because it shows him injured
and has him speaking and telling a story that happened to him. This is good
because it makes the audience feel intense as well because they want to know whether
he will be okay.
